Astana city

Astana, formerly known as Akmola until 1998, as Tzelinograd until 1992, and as Akmolinsk until 1961, the capital of Kazakhstan since 1997, is the second largest city (after Almaty- the former capital city) with an officially reported population of 775 800 people as of June 21, 2012 . It is located in the northern part of Kazakhstan in Akmola region. In 1995 the city was designated as the future capital of the newly independent country, and the capital was officially moved from Almaty on December 10, 1997. The new name of the city of Astana was assigned in 1998.
